11 Sep 2022 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM | Church Farm Coombes | Jay Kendall |
We have been invited to Church Farm, Coombes near Lancing by Jerry and Jenny Flake. The farm is in the South Downs National Park and because of the chalk has a very different flora to what most of us have – plus it’s a whole lot bigger at 1000 acres. It is a busy commercial mixed farm with arable cropping, Sussex cattle and large sheep flocks as well as fishing lakes, a maze, and camping facilities. The farm is in Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) so care of the environment and supporting family farms is important to Jerry and Jenny.
Jerry has kindly offered to drive us round the estate with a tractor drawn trailer and he will talk about the farm and the historic Coombes hamlet with its own Saxon church.
We plan to pick apples and make juice using SFTG’s apple press and we can also pick blackberries and apples for making jam. If you want to make other varieties of jam most frozen fruits (except strawberries) work well. Contact Jay Kendall (07845 143664 or knitwit95@gmail.com) if you would like to bring other fruit for jam making. Please also bring clean plastic milk cartons to take home some apple juice and jam jars with lids for the jam.
If you don’t want to make jam – or press apples – it is still fun day out and you would still be welcome.
If you need more information please email our training organiser.
