a warm welcome to…

The Small Farm Training Group

Formed in 1983, The Small Farm Training Group (SFTG) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Sussex, covering the Surrey and Kent areas too. Our aim is to enable members to learn better farming, smallholding and horticultural skills through our great value training courses.

Our members are all country-loving enthusiasts who are interesting in finding out more about and sharing their experiences of how to care for land, livestock and equipment in an efficient and professional way.

We organise various training courses for the smallholder, and more broadly for anyone interested in a variety of countryside activities, farming, and horticulture. The instructors are often smallholders themselves, trained in instructional techniques, or professional tutors who are geared to the person-to-person style of instructing in a small group.

Networking with like-minded people is a big part of what we offer – it’s a great way to meet new friends and share advice or get some help. We also offer the opportunity to sell your own produce to other members through our monthly meetings, our private forum pages, or our Facebook page and group.

Our free monthly Friday meetings usually have an interesting and informative professional speaker, and refreshments are provided. This is often a great opportunity to share experiences. The meetings start at 7.30 pm on the third Friday of most months with a speaker at 8pm and there’s also the opportunity to browse and borrow from our library. We actively encourage our members to bring along their produce to sell at these meetings, truly locally produced direct from the supplier.

We arrange various social events such as our annual “bring and share” picnic where members can showcase the best of their crop, and enjoy what others have produced too

In the summer months, we offer behind-the-scenes tours of local smallholdings, and following our AGM in November, we have a small dinner, often with an after dinner speaker from the local area.

If you’re not yet a member, we’d love to welcome you – why not come along to one of our meetings or courses and get involved?

Important information regarding Coronavirus and the SFTG’s activities

During this difficult time the committee wants to continue to organise as many of our normal activities as possible while ensuring that we make the necessary arrangements to keep everyone safe by following government guidelines.
As the name implies, the Small Farm Training Group is primarily an education/work based body and will follow the government guidelines for such activities. This includes ensuring that all our activities maintain social distance and provide the required facilities for participants’ hygiene and the prevention of disease transmission.
Rest assured that in all the events that we arrange the committee takes these matters seriously and we hope that all our members will feel safe and able to participate in and enjoy our activities and that they find them useful for furthering their smallholding dreams.
